How To Build A Website That Makes $100+ Per Month
91Making Money Online Is Possible
Making a website that earns $100 or more per month is something that anyone can do. All you need is the desire, a little grit and determination, and a willingness to learn from mistakes and the past experiences of others. If you have that, then you are ready to take the next steps to making your website.
But the thing about making money online is that it is not easy and it takes work. You can't just throw up any ol' website about shoe laces and expect to begin raking the cash like it is going out of style. What you are going to need to do now is find a topic, or niche, that you can build a website about that will be able to earn you $100 a month or more.
Selecting Your Niche: A Lesson In Keyword Selection
Finding a good niche for your website is the first step to creating that money making site. If you don't pick a niche that has traffic and has a way to monetize that traffic then you won't make any money from all the hard work that I will outline below. Your niche needs to be solid.
One of the best ways that I have found to tell if a site has both traffic and the potential to make money is to head over to check the niche in the Google Adwords Keyword tool found here: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
It will look something like this:
Now you need to enter something inside the text box. What you will enter here will be your niche/keyword(s).
Let's say that I really like birkenstock women's shoes - its my passion and it picks me up in the morning just thinking about this type of shoe. I want to see if I can make a website that will earn a minimum of $100 a month. So I am going to type "birkenstock women's shoes" into the text book in the keyword tool. Once that is entered, I will hit the Get Keyword Ideas button.
Now the next part is going to be very important: you are going to want to change the Match Type from broad to exact.
This will give you an idea of the number of Internet users who perform a search in Google using the phrase "birkenstock women's shoes." It is important to note that not all keyword tools are exact, but Google does provide some very good data to their AdWords clients through this tool - so you can expect this number to be fairly accurate.
As you can see from the photo, this term is searched ~40,500 times a month, or ~1350 times a day. Getting the first spot in Google will get you about 40% of all the search traffic for a term, so if your site is able to make it to that spot you can expect around 500-550 visitors a day from this term.
This is a pretty good amount of traffic and is definitely a possible niche for you target if you want to make $100 a month from your website. Now you have to decide if you can make any money off this type of traffic.
Will People Buy or Click ?
If you can't give an affirmative answer to the question of whether or not someone will buy something from your website or click on a CPC advertising method (like Google Adsense) then you probably shouldn't pursue the niche. It simply isn't worth your time.
In this case, I think we can make a strong argument that someone doing a search for "birkenstock women's shoes" is going to be looking to either buy some shoes or click on a link that offers to sell them shoes if it looks enticing enough.
But can you definitively say that someone searching for that keyword phrase will want do something that will earn you money? No, but all you have to go on right now is your gut. If you can't trust your gut, what can you trust?
How Much Can You Earn?
After determining if your site is going to be able to convert traffic into money you need to find out if your traffic numbers, your projected conversion rate, and your goal of $100 a month are going to fall into place with your particular niche.
The way you do that is by taking the the number of people you expect to get to your site, multiply that by your conversion rate (the number of people that will do something that earns you money), and multiply that by the average amount you will earn for each conversion. The equation will look something like this:
Monthly Traffic x Conversion Rate x $ per Conversion = Money Earned Per Month
Let's just say that in our "birkenstock women's shoes" example we end up ranking first for that keyword, bringing us 15,000 searches a month. Then let's say that we throw up some Amazon adds and have a conversion rate of 3% on our site. Since Amazon pays on a commission basis, we will be earning some portion of the price of the item we sold. For the sake of argument let's say that we are only average $1 per conversion (at payouts ranging from 4%-8% of purchase price I think this is relatively reasonable). We would calculate how much we would make by doing the following:
15,000 x .03 x $1 = $450
It looks like this site will be able to earn you your $100 a month if you work hard at it!
Pick A Website Platform and a Domain Name
After you find out your keyword you are going to want to set up your website. You are going to have to decide if want to go with a free hosting service like Blogger (since they let you display Adsense as well as other affiliate programs) or do some self hosting.
I personally recommend going with a self hosted blog or website, but I understand that this can seem a little daunting to a person just starting out with trying to make money online. I personally use Dream Host for my hosting and have generally been very happy with how they have treated me and my websites. I started out as a complete novice and found their interface easy to understand and work with.
But for most people it is going to be simpler if they start off trying to make money with a free blog. For that, I definitely recommend blogger. It has a pretty intuitive interface and lets you control pretty much everything about your blog if you are willing to get your hands dirty and learn coding.
One problem with free hosting platforms like Blogger is that a lot of the good domains names are already taken. For our example, the ideal domain for targeting birkenstock women's shoes would be:
http://birkenstockwomensshoes.blogspot.com/
... but that is already taken. So instead I had to settle for:
http://womensshoesbirkenstock.blogspot.com/
When selecting a domain name you want to try and get your keywords into the URL of your site. While this isn't the most important thing ever for your site, it is considered to be a tie breaker between two sites with exactly the same content and backlink strength. The site with the keyword in the URL wins.
Building Content For Your Site
The next step is to actually get out there and start building content for your site. If your site is focusing on a certain type of product you can do a couple different things when generating your content:
- write reviews of the products in your niche
- write descriptive posts about the products, describing them to potential buyers
- write sales pages for each product
- write posts that generally describe the niche that you are in
Each of these is definitely a viable strategy for making a $100 a month website, but you may want to get inside the head of a user before you make your final decision. You want to sell the most products that you can so that you can make the most money that you can so be sure that your content targets the right people with the right message so that you earn the money that you are trying to.
If you are making money using an advertising method like Adsense then your content creation becomes a lot easier. All you have to do is write whatever it is you want to write about as long as it is on topic with the niche that you are targeting. If I targeted the birkenstock women's shoes niche I could write about how they are the most hideous shoe outside of crocs, writing post after post about how they are similar and why they both suck.
This type of site could be very fun to create (if you like making fun of things) and can still end up making you money if you can get your site to rank well for your targeted terms. (It might not work out so well for that niche, but you never know).
One quick content creation rule to keep in mind:
Always, ALWAYS, make sure that all your content is thematically related on your niche site. If your site is about oil filters you probably shouldn't write a post about Babe Ruth and modern baseball's love affair with performance enhancement. Write that post for a place like hubpages or for your baseball blog - just leave it out of your $100 a month oil filter site.
What Next?
Niche selection? Check
Domain and hosting? Check.
Content created? Check
What's next? Backlinks, baby. Backlinks. Now it is time to make all your hard work pay off by doing some more hard work. It is time to go out there and get some links to your site.
Links are the currency of the online world. The richer you are in links, the better you will rank for your term. But you aren't seeking just any type of link - you are seeking properly anchored links.
To get those, you generally need to have some level of control over who will link to you. There are several ways to do just that. They are to:
- Submit your site to link directories
- Write articles and submit them to article directories
- Contact other site owners and ask for links or suggest a link exchange
- Get links from social media sites
Not all of these methods are created equal, but all are ways to get you links to your site and increase your popularity with the search engines.
Get Links: Submit Your Site To Directories
I have to be honest, directories are a little antiquated in this day and age. They are relics from the Internet's long gone past and the link juice they provide your sites is anything but spectacular. For sure there are some really good directories that you do really want to get links from, DMOZ, BOTW, Yahoo! Directory, etc, but many of these 'good' link directories charge you some money to get your link on their site.
To help you understand which directories you should be submitting to you should check out this post from SEO Zombie: the best link directories and the how to use his best directory list
I wouldn't go super crazy submitting your site to web directories since they do sometimes cost you money and not all directories are created equal. My suggestion is that if the page where your site would be listed has Page Rank then consider the directory, even if you have to pay some money to get listed. But be smart about it and don't spend $100s on directory links unless you feel like it will really benefit your site a lot.
But, beleive it or not - you can rank for some highly competitive terms still using directories as this Sphinn thread indicates.
Get Links: Submit Articles
Submitting articles to article directories is a really good way to get anchor backlinks to your site from pages relevant to your site's niche. The reason that these are good for this is that you write them yourself so you control the keywords used in the article and the anchor text of the link pointing to your site. You probably don't need to write a defining work every time you submit an article, but they should be clearly written and leave your reading wanting to visit your website.
There a three main ways to go about about article marketing:
- Submit unique articles to only the best article directories
- Submit your one article to lots and lots and lots of article directories
- Submit "unique" (i.e. spun) articles to lots and lots of article directories
Option 1 is usually what people low on cash do and is perfectly fine for a brand new site. You probably don't want hundreds of links pointing to your site in the first month or so from article directories anyway, since search engines like Google tend to think that this is a little spammy.
Now there is some debate about the differences between option 2 and option 3. Some say that option 2, though effective, is not as effective as option 3 since "spinning" an article will increase the likelihood that the article submited to article directory A will be different from the article submitted to article directory B. I'm not sure that I by this argument since the level of spinning required to make something unique is fairly high.
I will definitely need to do some more research in this area, so you can feel free to give either option a try. Right now I use Article Marketer (an option 2 service) - you can read my Article Marketer Review if you want more information.
Get Links: Other Site Owners Are Your Friend
This is by far the most important step on your road to making $100 a month with a website. If you can get enough site owners to link to you then you can forgo submitting your site to link directories or doing any article marketing. Do you think CNN or Amazon submits their sites to directories or writes articles in article directories? You'd have to be kidding me.
They power of these sites: they have content or provide a service that inspires other website owners to link to them. Chances are that you won't have a website that is as awesome or useful as CNN or Amazon, but if you can make some relationships with people who have sites in your niche or in a related niche then you would have a really good chance of them linking to your site. They may ask for a link in return, but that seems like a fair arrangement to me.
You should be spending the bulk of your link building efforts trying to track down site owners to link to your site with the proper anchor text. If you can do that then you will rank very quickly for the keyword terms that you are trying to rank for and will be that much closer to creating your first $100 a month site.
Get Links: Use Social Media
I honestly don't know why I am including the use of social media as a way to get links to your site. The truth is, links from social media sites are crappy and have to be received in massive quantities to do much for your ranking power. When you have to get massive amounts of something it usually means that it isn't going to worth your time to do it by hand. There are plenty of tools out there that will help you get these links, but I don't use any of them.
A lot of social media sites are dofollow, so the links are worth something. Just don't go too crazy in getting them.
Making Money Takes Work
If you haven't figured it out by now, making money online takes a lot of work. It is very possible and you can definitely do it - you just need to make that commitment to do what it takes. There are no free lunches and there are no easy ways out. But if you work hard and create a website that is useful and meets the needs of Internet users you will be well on your way to making a nice, reoccurring, and mostly passive income.
If you are going to take the advice of this hub seriously, then you need to spend about 10% of your time doing your research, finding a host and domain name, and building good content for your site. The other 90% of your time you should spend getting links. If you can do that you will make money online.

helpful content. good stuff!
A lot of info to take it but all very helpful. Many thanks
great done , you managed all the things in a very nice way ,
i can say that i tried all but i didn't tried all at on one ,
thanks for writing this , i think i can make my really $100/day.
Wow excellent info. I didn't know directory submissions were still effective. Do you use an automated tool like Directory Submitter?
Thanks for the information. Good read.
This is a rare 'how to make money on the web' article with really good, original and helpful advice. Well done!
Very informative!
Excellent advice - love the screenshots!
Thanks for the extra effort.
Excellent hub.
A lot of very useful information thank you for the help.
great information, very useful
Thanks, being new I appreciate any help you and other hubbers can give.I'm sure I will go over the article again and again. I may have questions as i read, so you may get several questions.
A lot to take in when you just started!
Great topic and information! Thanks. Just starting out here and this will help. One question, though: you switched between $100/day and $100/month a couple times. What really is our goal here? Hard work is worth $100/day, but I'm not sure it is for $100/month. :-)
Nice job on the hub score StewardL! The tips in here are the exact ways I run my website and I'm proof you can make hundreds in a niche. I would suggest adding Youtube video promotion in a new edition.
Thanks for the very clear explanation of using the AdWords tool.
We were delighted to see that you ended by saying it is hard work! We know that from our website. We love writing/publishing, but have yet to make $100 per month.
Also just be patient and be prepared to wait to come out the other side of the google sandbox. Google cansupress your site for anything from 6-18 months before you start ranking.
During this time you can always build more sites, but it takes a lot of belief that you are doing things right if your doing it for the first time.
My first site http://www.bonsai-pictures.com has only just started to rank after about 6 months now. It's a great feeling when it does though
yep agree $100 doesnt take to much effort, its earning +$1000 a month were it gets to be a bit more difficult
Wow! Really good! Thanks for all of the good information!
Hey thanks for the info and inspiring words! :) I'm doing something similar to the bonzai picture thing, but haven't published the site yet. It;s on medical stuffs. I see your ranking is getting pretty high up there! That's soooo exciting! Good luck, as if you're not already, i'm sure you'll be making some nice checks here pretty soon!
hey very good hub, nice content thanks for share
Great Hub !
This is a great resource and you made the information useful and understandable because sometimes it can get real technical when it comes to learning all the internet terminology, thanks
Very informative! Thank you for sharing. It makes me think whether to just enjoy hubbing and blogging or start making money from writing.
Thanks for being honest and admitting that it takes hard work to actually make some money online. It was refreshing! I learned a lot too.
Great hub!! I have been looking for much of this info. Write lots more!
Thanks.
Good guide and helpful info. Getting backlinks seems so hard though.
WHat a fabulous hub. Thanks for all of the useful info.
I have to agree that social media is not the way to go when chasing good converting traffic. I have made profitable keyword based sites that attract maybe 10 or 20 hits a day, but because of the words chosen they convert very well, and I only go for words with value too. Set up 100 such sites and you can enjoy some good quality income for time to come...
Great hub, thanks for the useful info but I think I'm a lost cause as I hate Birkenstocks! :)
Good stuff thanks for the info - is it possible to make $100 a month with one hubpage ?
So how did it go with the Birkenstock Women's Shoes blogger?
As far as I can see, the search term has plenty of competition.
PR4 and higher in the first three search results.
You'll never make it to the first spot. But your formula assumes you will...
Hi,
Very useful information for new blogger.
The first thing to make money from internet is your passion towards your subject. If you select very rich keyword but if you haven't any interest on that topic then you can not write more.
To earn money online just follow your interest in any niche.
Hi,
Great hub and vert detailed in the early stages. However, I would suggest that social media should not be overlooked.
I use social media extensively, in fact, I can dominate page one of google using nothing but social techniques and tactics. In my humble opinion, social media should not be excluded.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Derek
One of the most sensible articles I have read on making money on the net and everything I've observed seems to certainly be pointing to what you say. It is so so different to offline and making the adjustment in your head can be difficult and catch you out. For example, I never thought a domain name could be so important but learnt the hard way how it was for getting anyone to view a site/search engine traffic. When you go from offline to online, you just see domain name as like a brandname but oh no it's not - that's for sure! Cheers StewardL.
Excellent hub...and you say what a lot of people don't want to hear...it takes WORK...
A very informative post.........Thanks for sharing.
Hello! Your explanaiton of how you calculate your potential earnings based on number of searches and conversion rate was extremely interesting and useful. Thanks so much, dawei888
Fantastic hub. I have been hubbing without much guidance concerning topics... now that will all change. Excellent resources, very well written.
I like your site. very helpfull for earning money on internet
Excellent hub I have been working the last few months trying to find a way to generate a steady income using the internet you have some great advice. Thanks
Great hub! I'm impressed! I've found here a lot of interesting and useful information. I'm a blogger-beginner, that's why your hub has helped me a lot! Thanks!
The process of building a website has to begin with choosing the most suitable niche that has potential to make money and it is written around the desired keyword. If the website has to be colorful then there has to be ads grabbing the reader’s attention or affiliate links. Then it is possible to generate revenue more than $100 monthly.
Great hub, I agree..
Very well written hub .....
very much informative ......
Thank you very much for your great hub, for good advice, good wishes and support. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.
StewardL,
I found your hub pretty digestible, which I don’t think entirely related to my now countless hours reading and researching. Even if it’s “pretty standard” information, there will be people who like YOUR way of explaining things better than others.
I remain however extremely green. What do you think about this as a possible strategy:
I pick first 1, then up to 3-5 of my secondary passions for niches over the next 3-6 months. I start a Blogger/Blogspot blog to begin the learning curve on keyword selection, domain name, links, ads/affiliates etc. Next I pick a 2nd or 3rd niche topic, or create “unique” versions of my initial niche pick and start a today.com or other free, easy to use blog service. During this time, I write articles for HubPages, eZineArticles, about.com etc on this/these niches. Maybe I even choose my best guess at a purely commercial topic. I make my mistakes, learn my lessons (but not on my true passion niche). If I start seeing some income, then I must be doing something right.
Meanwhile, I also build my library of articles on my true passion niche at HubPages, eZine, etc. Once I have learned enough to have picked my optimal domain name and keywords, I set up my own website &/or WordPress blog. (Assuming this is a reasonable strategy) Can I then go back and add to or revise links to my now established site/blog on my already published HubPages, eZine or other articles?
THanks, Rose Mary
This was a wonderful hub. I really like the way you have broken down the topic into a logical sequence.
Cheers!
Great Hub! I will bookmark this. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks very much for this article - this is probably the best article I have seen yet on how to make money with a web site or a blog. This is exactly what you have to do. There are very few blogs or sites that make more than $100 a month. The reason the internet marketing gurus make so much money is that they have hundreds of blogs and web sites, with multiple streams of incoe-producing content on their pages. It can take them several years to build up their networks on the internet, but after they have done all the work and become established, it becomes easier... Here is my latest: Web Sites Free For Beginners at: http://WebSitesFreeForBeginners.blogspot.com
great hub, lots of good detail. Sounds easier than it often is, but a simple plan laid out like this should be followed for success
Very refreshing to land on a hub about making money online that actually gives good advice about making money online. Some people's idea of making money online seems to be write a low-content hub/article/blogpost with the keywords 'make money online', attract 'make money online' type ads and hope that when people realize your content is useless they will click away from your site via an ad! Sadly it probably works for them as they keep doing it. (BTW I wasn't purposely trying to stuff my comment with the keywords 'make money online'!)
Thanks a lot, pretty helpful indeed!
For the beginner this is overwhelming. Most people would be best to start a hubpage to see if this is really something they want to do.
hi steward....i think people will click more than buy....but sometimes depending on which kind of products that offered....however you gave a clear guideline on how to make money online...it's pretty impressive for me.....thanks for sharing
I am new to Hubpages. I still have to find out exactly how it all works, but I like your article. It has a lot of good information and I will be reading it again. I am wondering about the social media comment, though. I don't understand why they would not be a good source for links. I am on face book and it seems like it would work out pretty well. My network is growing everyday on facebook, but I may not have the correct understanding of this. I am a beginner and I appreciate that you have said it is hard work. In all the searching I have done to learn how to make money on line, I believe your article is the most useful. Thank you.
Read it and inspired. Thank you steward, you describe precisely.
Be careful using free hosting and blog platforms for your site. You really do not have complete control and you can lose your hard work. I know several who had nice sites making some money and the company either went belly up or banned their account for a policy violation.
I agree with Camping Dan. People need to make sure they save their work if they are going to use free hosting.
great hub, very insightful. Looking forward to more of your work.
Thank you mate, I'm going to try this as soon as possible.
how can i increase so much traffic to earn a bit money?
Three years ago I never would have dreamed of doing any of this. Now I use terms like ftp transfer, and content management systems...weird. Really good post!
First I want to say that building a website take time. You just don't build today and earn tomorrow. And second, well, do not stress to much with the idea that you will never reach first page of search results. It will come as long you create good content and you are active in your online social life. As I said it takes time so, be patient.
Have a nice site building ;)
It's not an easy task to get money.
It takes time. You can't just build a website and wait for the money.
It must take 6 months to 1 year.
Good info. I have built lots of sites over the years and it is definitely not a get rich quick type of thing. I think you have to love doing it and have a lot of patience and a good work ethic. But if you stick with it, you can definitely make money with this technique.
Really great article! Lot of useful information in one article. Unfortunately, I found out that my niche is not so searched like your shoes in the example :-(
Nice break down of the process. Thanks!
This hub is very useful for those who try to make money online.
Thanks for sharing.
Very impressive hub. Thanks for posting. I haven't done a web site yet, but I hope to try it soon. I think a blog is a good next step. - Carol
Amazing stuff. I really like the article.. Truly amazing
Very excellent hub. I going to get in practice
Great Hub,
I can still remember years ago when I finally hit that first paycheck from adsense, I thought I was in heaven. Now that I have learned how to locate and develop a niche, affiliate earnings make it possible to work online full time.
I found that many people do not want to pay for traffic using adwords, but if you are a legitimate business, most of the costs are written off as a business expense.
Great Hub,
Bob
Link building is changing with the new Google updates and algorithms. Social content is going to be much more important than simple "link exchanges" and other old ways of building links. They will be looking for sites that are mentioned socially and within content. So social media and article writing are the way to for backlink building.
For link exchanges with other sites, the most important thing to remember is relevancy - don't just get listed in a bunch of general directories - if your site is about acupuncture, get links from health and alternative medicine sites.
excellent hub.please post more information on niche selection and keyword research.that would be great.
Great information! thanks
Your hub is very informative and helpful. It has confirmed my suspicion that making money this way just isn't for me. I'd rather just have some fun than worry about keywords and only getting a few cents for a click.
Solid information...and realistic about the amount of time it takes to see if you have anything worth your effort. It should scare off those who run at the idea of work.
very good information. Can you teach me more details my friend?
Hi,
Excellent info. You have revealed all the secrets of affiliate marketing. Learning, research and hard works...altogether make a person successful whether on line or off line.
I am in a real life business and my experience says so.
Thanks and thumbs up!
Jyoti Kothari
Wow you have done an amazing job highlighting all of the important steps in setting everything up. And I must be honest in saying that any venture we take on will need some amount of work to keep things moving, people need to know that. I am not saying that it is not do-able and you have provided all of the tools necessary for that, now it up to us...great work!
I really like your simple to follow instructions and that you are clear to people that this will take work. I really enjoyed reading this Hub!
Very excellent and and well laid-out hub Steward. Thanks for taking the time to write this.
As far as Option 1, 2 & 3 goes, I'd say that Option 3 (spun articles) would beat Option 2 anyday - simply because each spun article would be a unique version no matter if it's just a slight bit (although it's best if you can get them to vary at least 25-30% from each other). At least each of these unique versions would have a chance to rank in the search engines instead of just being a duplicates. Plus to take it even further you could optimize them with different keywords for better SEO.
Wow - Good Work! I'll be back friend.
Good information here, Thanks
Great and useful information that you have provided here. Thanks for the tips, as well as the links.
I wish I would have found this hub a few months ago. I've been trying to make money on the web since August. So far $21.00 and it cost me more than that to make that much. You've put down some really good information in this hub, thank you for that. I am going to try and use the info to start making some money before I go BROKE.
Thanks again for the great hub.
Carmine
Thanks for a great hub, inspiring and very helpful. I will refer back to it to make sure I have covered everything.
Great HUB. I can't wait to try out your advice! Thanks again!
Great post very informative, will surely try...
While researching blogs, I bumped into your hub and you've offered great tips and info on blogging. So, you can't just spew your opinions if you want to make money, ey? Learning that lesson here on Hubpages and starting to make a little.
Great and useful information that you have provided here. Thanks for the tips, as well as the links.
this is useful
Great article. Earning money online is actually fun if you start enjoying the hard work goes into it.
I am sure promoting your site, collaboration with other bloggers is not that boring :-) So the key here is work hard and enhance your web knowledge and be ready for extra income every month.
I wrote an article for beginners in my hub.
Great Hub, another tip to get links from high pagerank web sites is search the term "Powered by Link manager LinkMan 1.07 from PHPJunkYard - free php scripts." in commas in google and it will return a list of websites using the linkman.php script which is a reciprocal link exchange script. All you need is to check the pagerank through google and if its high enough exchange links with them.
I definitely will make this hub as a guide for building my blog and earning money online. Why is it I only saw it now?

Sometimes you don’t know how much you like a tool until its gone. Although I’ve never been an affiliate for Market Samurai – I’ve used the tool on basically a weekly basis for years – I may have had it for about 3 years actually!
